3/13/2020: Empathy training continued. Discussed accepting differences and identified similarities and differences between two people in a story. Predicted how others will feel when experiencing prejudice.
3/6/2020: Empathy training continued. Discussed how to verbally express or show concern for another and state appreciation for another person's concern. This lesson puts empathy into action with a focus on children making sensitive responses to their peers.
1/31/2020: Empathy training, discussed how to show someone they are listening and how to be an active listener. Discussed physical and verbal skills of active listening and described non active listening clues. Role played active listening skills.
1/24/2020: Started unit on anger management. Students watch a short video of a student who got angry due to another student. Discussed what made the student angry, and different options for how the student could handle anger. Explored physical signs of anger in student and other signs student have when they are angry (I.e. body temperature, clenched fist). Identified different strategies students can use when they feel angry.
1/17/2020: Lesson was on active listening and what traits a good lister has. The Student identified traits such as eye contact, body language, not interrupting. The students practiced and Mr. Jackson coached active listening skills.
1/10/2020: Lesson concentrated on "Anger Buttons" things that cause us to feel angry. Discussed a story of a student who was feeling angry and the things in the story that cause him to feel angry. Talked about ways we can handle our angry when upset. Deep breathing, walking away, asking an adult for help were ideas.
1/3/2020: Reviewed rules and expectations of group. Reviewed cooperation and how to cooperate with other students. Practiced classroom appropriate behaviors and praised for positive classroom and hallway behavior.
12/4/19: Met on Wednesday due to being unable to meet on Friday this week. Continued work on cooperation. Reviewed cooperation steps. Played a game and instructor provided feedback on cooperative behavior vs. non cooperative behavior. Coached students on cooperative behaviors.
11/22/2019: Discussed cooperation and read book "Join in and Play". Discussed steps to being cooperative which the group decided were:
1. Talk respectfully
2. Take turns
3. Share
4. Listen
11/15/2019: Resumed group. Discussed rock thinking, a person
who is stuck in their own thinking, vs flexible thinking, a person who is willing to be flexible in their thinking and change their mind/compromise when needed. Discussed how this applied to situation on the playground and what a rock thinker would do vs a flexible thinker.
11/01/2019: No group due to Dragon Kids 2nd grade ceremony happening at the same time.
10/25/2019: Went over procedures and expectations. Discussed Social Skills and what we would work on.
