3/16/2020: Continued on Impulse control. Resisting the Impulse to lie. Discussed a story and identified consequences of lying, identified benefits to telling the truth, use a problem solving strategy when tempted to lie by understanding the problem, consequences for lying. Talked about steps to resisting the impulse to lie:
1. Think about the consequences of lying
2. Tell yourself "I'm honest and trustworthy. I won't lie"
3. Say what really happened, apologize, and offer to make amends
3/4/2020: Discussed a story about a kid who was short a dollar for an item he wanted and was thinking about stealing money from his parents in order to get the item. Discussed impulsivity and the stop and think strategy. Talked about how it would make others feel when someone steals and how we can lose people trust when we make a decision like that.
2/26/2020: Group worked on dealing with peer pressure. Students heard a story about a child pressuring another child to go up in a tree to get a kite, but the kid did not have permission and would need to trespass in order to do it. Discussed peer pressure and how to say "No" to a peer when they pressure you to do something that is against the rules or going to get you into trouble.
2/19/2020: The lesson today was making conversation. Discussed impulsiveness and the skill of "Stop and Think" before acting on an initial thought. Discussed a story in which two a girl tried to engage with another girl in conversation but didn't know how to go about it. Talked about starting/having a conversation skill:
1. Look at the Person
2: Use a pleasant voice
3. Listen to what the other person says
4. When there is a break in the conversation ask a question or share your thoughts.
We then coached, modeled, and practiced this skill together.
2/10/2020: Group started a lesson on Impulse control. Watched a video clip and discussed what an impulse is. Discussed impulsive behaviors seen in the group and what kind of consequences can happen due to those impulsive decisions. Discussed coping strategies to help when being impulsive. Deep breathing and "Calming Yourself Down" strategy:
1. Stop and Think
2. Ask yourself: How does my body feel?
3. Try
a. talking three deep breaths
b. Counting backward slowing (in your head)
c. Thinking calming thoughts
d. Talking to yourself (inner coach in your head)
2/5/2020: Learned about prejudice, a preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience, and how that can affect how we treat others. Discussed finding similarities with those we don't know and how we make others feel when they experience prejudice.
1/27/2020: We started to learn about Empathy. We discussed what empathy is and watch a short video on a situation where students had different emotions. We identified emotions from the video and discussed how emotions can change due to someone else's actions.
1/15/2020: Group met and talked about active listening. Discussed how we know how others are listening to us such as by eye contact, body language, not interrupting. Practiced active listening and coached students on their listening skills.
1/6/2020: Reviewed group expectations and procedures. Reviewed listening skill and introduced empathy. Discussed how others feel within the context of conflicting feelings. The group talked about the story and identified how another person might have conflicting feelings in the story. Gave additional story examples and had students identify conflicting feelings in the additional examples.
12/18/2019: Continued work on listening. Played game that incorporated storytelling and student practiced listening skills. Professional coached student on listening skills throughout group.
12/9/2019: Continued to work on listening skills. Reviewed steps then modeled and practiced steps. Coached students on listening skills used during group sharing time. Did an activity that focused on listening to each other. Discussed activity and different things that made it hard to listen and strategies they used to listen to each other. Practiced deep breathing to calm body and mind.

11/18/2019: Continued to work on listening. Did an activity of trying to listen to one student while trying to ignore the other student. De-briefed about activity and reinforced how difficult it can be to listen when others are talking out of turn.
11/11/2019: Continued to work on listening. Discussed why listening was an important skill for friendship as well as classroom. Did activity modeling and practicing listening and discussed activity.
10/28/2019: Discussed friendship and what qualities students liked in friendships. Worked on the skill of listening, practiced, coached, and gave feedback to students in group on their listening skills:
1. Look at the person
2. Stay quiet and listen to what is being said
3. Don't interrupt and wait until it is your turn to talk
4. Nod head and say okay (to show you are listening)
