2/25/2020: Worked on emotion identification. Viewed a picture of three people and worked on identifying emotions by facial expression and body language. Understanding how someone feels will help students respond to friends and others appropriately.
2/4/2020: Watched a clip of Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood on persistency. Reviewed Grit and the importance of continuing to try new things even when they are hard. Discussed feelings of pride, a feeling that we get after we persevere and accomplish something that was difficult for us.
1/28/2020: Continued to work on identifying feelings in others and how to support others when they are having negative feelings.
1/14/2020: Continued to work on empathy and identify how others feel by reading a story and discussing the story. Discussed actions when people are angry and how anger is not a bad thing, what we do with our anger makes it good or bad. Discussed some positive things we can do with our anger such as talk to an adult, breath, walk away, choose to play something else.
1/7/2020: Reviewed group rules and expectations. Introduced the concept of empathy which is the ability to understand and share feelings of another.
12/10/2019: Continued work on grit and perseverance. Watched video clip of Daniel Tiger's neighborhood about learning a new skill and continuing to try even when he was failing. Discussed feelings associated with failure and normalized feelings. Reframed feelings as positive motivators to continue working on the skill the student is having a hard time with because when they master the skill they will have had a hard time with they will have a larger sense of pride for accomplishing them.
11/26/2019: Continued discussion on Grit and perseverance. Explored things that are hard and time students gave up on things in the past. Discussed how this could affect their friendships when they don't work through frustration. Discussed people that depend on students at home and school and what would happen if they didn't follow through on their responsibilities.
11/19/2019: Reviewed the book "Try and stick with it". Discussed areas that could give students difficulty at school and why learning something new is hard. Discussed strategies that help students keep trying when things get hard. Students identified strategies such as try again, take a break and try again, and ask for help.
11/12/2019: Continued discussion and Grit and perseverance. Talked about things at school that are difficult and how continuing to try at those things help make those difficult things become easier.
10/29/2019: Group worked on developing "Grit" which is defined as "courage and resolve, strength of character". Read book "Try and Stick with It". Discussed learning new things and how it can be hard, but perseverance will develop character and things that are hard at school will get easier the more you practice the skills. Discussed real word examples like learning to tie your shoes and riding a bike.
